We Americans are serious about our entertainment.  We jump off bridges for fun, free-fall from airplanes, laugh hysterically in movie theaters, and scream on roller-coasters at breakneck speeds.  We spend hours cheering for our favorite teams, perfecting our favorite computer games, and staring at our favoriate TV shows...all in the name of leisure.

Perhaps our orientation toward entertainment is greater than we care to admit.  It's easy to medicate from pressure with ready-made distractions, filling our days with novels, movies, sports, shopping, etc.

At its heart, amusement is a diversion from the important.  It does not satisfy our thirst for purpose; it merely distracts our attention.  It's a substitute for something far more valuable; a purpose for living which includes loving God and serving others.
