Spirit-Filled Life

Whether you realize it or not, the Holy Spirit is actively involved in every dimension of your Christian life, from before the point of your conversion until you get to heaven. We are never intended to live our lives apart from him. In fact we cannot live our Christian lives apart from him! The Holy Spirit acts as our guide and our companion-the one sent from heaven to lead us home. He enables us to obey God, empowers us to become like Jesus, and fills us with supernatural power for work and for witness. We should therefore learn how to listen to Him, how to follow Him, how to rely on his power, and how to walk in his fullness.

A Picture of Spiritual Health

Have you ever seen a magnetic, framed photograph on someone’s refrigerator with the caption “A Picture of Health”? Spiritual Horticulture

The Bible frequently uses horticultural metaphors to help us understand the Christian life:

  • The New Testament writers speak of our sowing and reaping (Gal. 6:7-9; 2 Cor. 9:6).
  • Believers in Christ are compared to branches that must abide in the vine and bear fruit (Jn. 15:1-8).
  • Evangelism is described as planting and watering (1 Cor. 3:6).
  • According to Paul, we need to be rooted in love (Eph. 3:17) and rooted in Christ (Col. 2:7).
  • We are to bear the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22; Eph. 5:9), the fruit of righteousness (Heb ...

Light and Heat

He was a burning and a shining light.”
– Jesus on John the Baptist (John 5:35) In a sermon on John 5:35, Jonathan Edwards insisted that two things must be married in the heart and life of a preacher: light and heat. He must not only shine, but burn.

If a minister has light without heat, and entertains his auditory with learned discourses, without a savour of the power of godliness, or an appearance of fervency of spirit, and zeal for God and the good of souls, he may gratify itching ears, and fill the heads of his people ...
