Devotions

Intimacy with the Lord Jesus Christ is essential to the Christian walk. Only by spending time with Him can we learn to love Him and know Him. Yet all too often, we treat devotions as a low priority; we neglect them in favor of lesser pursuits. Allow these resources to give you the encouragement—and the tools—you need to seek after Christ daily.

Our Greatest Treasure

Imagine inheriting an enormous fortune of five billion dollars and committing to withdraw only $1 a day. Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? Why limit yourself to $1 when you have billions at your disposal? But that is exactly what many people do with the greatest treasure of all, God's Word. An immeasurable source of joy and power lies at their fingertips, and they settle for a "commitment" to read their "One-Minute Bible." Is God's Word your treasure? Can you say with the psalmist, "In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches" (Psa ...

Engaging the Culture with the Gospel

Almost all critical Christian thinkers agree that we live in a post-Christian culture.

There was a time when the majority of people in Western cultures, whether churched or not, had a worldview shaped by Christian theism. But that is no longer the case.

The age of Christendom is over. Our culture is increasingly hostile to the exclusive claims of the gospel, and a pressing question of the day is, How do we engage the culture with the gospel.

A Place of Quiet Rest

Some time ago, I asked the women attending a weekend conference where I was speaking to write on a three-by-five-inch card why they had come and what it was they were hoping God would do in their lives through the weekend. "Where does God find you as we start this weekend?" I asked.
Later, as I read the responses to my question, I was amazed at how many of them sounded alike. Here is a sampling: "I feel I'm out of control sometimes with so many pressures."
"I feel like I'm torn in all directions."
"I need to ...

Worth Being Concerned About

"As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord's feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, 'Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.' "But the Lord said to her, 'My dear Martha, you are so upset over all these ...

Do I Delight in God?

If we take morning devotions simply as a duty and a necessary part of our religious life, they will very soon become a burden. Or, if the chief thought be our own happiness and safety, that will not supply the power to make the “morning watch” truly attractive. There is only one thing that will suffice: the desire for fellowship with God. It is for this that we were created in God's likeness. It is this in which we hope to spend eternity. It is this alone which can fit us for a true and blessed life, either here ...

Beholding the Glory of Christ

Spiritual disciplines are structures we build into our lives to keep us beholding the glory of Christ. Rather than being ends in themselves, the disciplines (celebration, service, Bible study, silence, prayer, etc.) are actually pathways through which we can see Jesus. There are five guidelines that can help us grow to effectively use the disciplines: 1) Remember that the disciplines are more internal than external. Spirituality is not measured by check-boxes or lists of accomplishments, but by a renovated heart, and a renewed mind. 2) Both regular, small doses, and occasional, large doses are necessary. You might choose to have ...
