God, A Believer's Glory

There is a destructive principle that tells us that faith is only to be a rational assent to the Word of God, without a particular application of that Word made to our souls. This is as contrary to the gospel, and to the experience of every real saint, as light is contrary to darkness, and heaven to hell.

My brethren, what good would it do you if you had ten thousand checks in your coat pockets, but when you looked at them, there was not one payable to you? Likewise with the promises of the gospel. All that is said ...

The Empowering Presence of the Holy Spirit

Theologian Wayne Grudem defines the Holy Spirit's role as to "make known the presence of God in the world, and specifically the church." The presence of the Spirit distinguishes the Christian church and is the privilege of all who put their trust in Jesus (Acts 2:16-21; Rom. 8:9-11). The power of the Holy Spirit enables Christians to live as children of God (Gal. 4:6-7; Rom. 8:14-16).

The influence of the Spirit's presence is both powerfully proclaimed and carefully described in chapter 5 of Paul's letter to the Galatians. Paul is aware of two ...

Leading With Integrity

Psalm 15 reveals a moment when King David resolved to embrace the meaning of real integrity at a deeper level than ever before. At the time, David wrestled with his own storm. Reputable scholars believe he penned this psalm while in exile, after a painful political coup led by his embittered son Absalom (2 Samuel 15-17). In the midst of this incredible turmoil, he penned these words:

Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart; he who does not backbite ...

After Breakthrough

I had invested eight years in campus ministry when God surprised me and the staff I was working with at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. On a Friday evening as we listened to the testimonies of two visiting students from a nearby Christian college, God revealed Himself in His holiness. Suddenly we found ourselves broken and repenting publicly over the sin lurking beneath the surface of our lives.

Before the evening was over, everything was brought into the light, often through tears: anger, bitterness, pride, hatred, deception, stealing, spiritual coldness, and a wide range of sexual sins. Since the vast ...

God's Purposes IN and IN BETWEEN Revivals

There are two fallen tendencies when it comes to understanding revival ("the wells of salvation"). On the one hand, there are those who deny that revivals still come, teaching that Pentecost was the last and only outpouring of the Spirit for Christians to expect. While this view honors the historical significance of Pentecost, it denies the subsequent outpourings in Acts and redemptive history.

On the other hand, there are those who insist we should be having revival every week. While the former view removes all expectations for revivals, this latter view pressures us to take responsibility to see revivals come ...

How to Preach the Gospel to Yourself

The gospel isn't just a means of salvation; it is the very way we grow as Christians. When Paul wrote his letters to the Galatians or Corinthians, he addressed each problem in the Christian community with the gospel.

For example, Peter, who stopped eating with the Gentiles, wasn't told to "stop," which is legalism; he was told that his actions weren't in line with the gospel. His motivation for change was a reminder of who Christ is and what He has done. We are set free by grace.

From this understanding comes the phrase, "I need to ...

Personal Meditations on Powerful Texts

"So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase."  (Acts 9:31 NASB)

Why is it that most followers of Jesus only know the presence of Christ intermittently? Many cry out to God in crises, but few seek to live in the atmosphere of God's presence continually.

But there are a few. And to be around them is almost always to encounter God. Their lives radiate the supernatural fragrance of Christ, who ...
