The Problems of an Unregenerate Church Membership

Editor’s Note: Our decision to print this article is not intended as a critique of one particular denomination, but rather something that we believe should be carefully considered by the evangelical church, where indications are that generally only 7% of those who commit their lives to Christ can be found in any church within 7-10 years.1             “How are you doing?”              “Pretty well, under the circumstances.”              “What are the circumstances?”              “Well, I have a very effective arm. It moves with quite a bit of animation. But then I have my bad leg.”              “What’s wrong with it?”              “I guess ...

The M.O. of a Good Samaritan

In Latin, modus operandi means “method of operation.” In our society law enforcement officers refer to these Latin words with the abbreviation M.O. I am sure that you have heard the terminology on a television program where a police officer referred to the M.O. of a particular criminal. Perhaps the M.O. of a bank robber was his dark sunglasses. Or maybe a serial killer was known for leaving notes made from letters cut from a newspaper. In the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37), Jesus describes the M.O. which should characterize His followers. The ...

Taming the Tongue

Nature reinforces the observation that small objects often possess a power that is proportionally far greater than their size. Nuclear energy is a prime example. Scientists tell us that they can generate enough electricity to supply the world for millions of years through harnessing the power of the atom. But what makes this statement so astonishing is that this incredible power is unleashed from the nucleus of particles that are smaller than one one-millionth of the width of a piece of human hair!              It is important to remember that vast power can be used either for good or bad. We ...

No Kiss

“Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. . . . To whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little” (Luke 7:40, 47). I might suggest that this was the most exciting day in the life of this man, Simon the Pharisee. He had managed to get the most amazing Man in history into his home. I am quite sure Simon thought to filter the number of people he would have come into the place to eat.  So his first problem was the folk. Of course he got the VIPs there, that’s the thing we do—it’s the thing the ...

Kenny Corn Letter

Editor’s Note: Heartcry Journal received the following letter within the past month. The passion and insight contained in it seemed worth sharing with our readers. We pass it on in the spirit it was given—with a broken heart and desperation for God.    The other day I heard a pastor (not my pastor) preach a lifeless, passionless, pointless sermon with no power and no fire. I am not referring to animated “aerobic exercise class” preaching. (Vance Havner, a great man of God, preached with power and passion and fire, yet he was not animated but monotone and motionless in ...

Revival at Wheaton College 1949

Editor’s Note: Our ministry received this letter recently from Ray Lucas, a student during the revival that broke out at Wheaton College in 1949. The following is his description of his experience during those days.  Several weeks before the revival came to campus, I was praying alone in my dorm room. I realized that I had lost some fire and zeal for the Lord, and as I was on my face before the Lord I could see the light from the hall shining under the door. I prayed, “Lord, please revive my heart. I’ll do anything if You ...

The Life and Ministry of Howell Harris

Howell Harris (1714-1773) was one of the greatest leaders of the Evangelical Awakening and Revival in Wales and England in the mid-1700s. Along with Daniel Rowlands he was also one of the founders of Methodism in Wales. Martyn Lloyd-Jones called him “one of the great heroic figures of the Christian church.” The story of his life is both convicting and encouraging as a demonstration of the Spirit’s mighty work in revival.  Conviction, Conversion and Assurance  Howell Harris was born in the small hamlet of Trevecka, Wales, in 1714 but was not converted until 1735 when he was 21 years ...
