Adultery and Apostasy: The Bride and Bridegroom

In Ephesians 5:21-32, Christ makes a very strong statement concerning the church as His bride. In this passage, God very carefully intertwines His relationship and the church with the marriage relationship between husband and wife. In fact, the two ideas are so fused together that it is almost impossible to divide them in an exegetical study:

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church; and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject ...

Personal Meditations on Powerful Texts

That we are living in an age of moral and spiritual decline is an assertion that few evangelical Christians would debate. The signs of decay are everywhere in society today, including within the four walls of the church. The question is no longer “Is there is a problem?” but rather “What are we, as the people of God, to do?” Psalm 85 outlines a course of action for those looking for spiritual answers in the midst of troubled times.

First, the psalmist reviewed the evidences of God’s love (verses 1-3). In six remembrances, he chronicled the faithfulness and compassion ...

The Revival in the Confederate Army

The revival that took place in the armies of the Confederate States of America was among the most unusual recorded in history. War is generally a time of spiritual defection. The removal of men from their accustomed routines and from the influence of their home ties usually renders the development of the spiritual life and high moral standards difficult. Therefore, to find a great revival maintained over a period of years in a body of troops spread throughout a large territory is an interesting and instructive phenomenon.

The Development of the Revival

The work of grace first appeared in the ...

The Purpose of Revival (Part One)

“This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it?” (Isaiah 14:26, 27)

God has always worked by means of revivals. Since the dawn of human history, His purposes have progressed by sudden and mighty movements of the Spirit:

The world of mankind has not advanced by evolution but by revolution. Many changes have taken place rapidly. Eden, the Flood, and the Exodus period are Old Testament illustrations of these revolutionary epochs, while ...

Whirlwind in the Welsh Valleys: Evan Roberts

Twelve miles north of the city of Cardiff, the villages of the Dare Valley housed hundreds of miners. At the head of the road leading into this valley was the town of Aberdare and its five satellite villages. Evan Roberts was not scheduled to preach in the area, but when officers of the Bryn Seion Chapel in Aberdare heard that he had cancelled his previously planned engagement, they invited the young student to substitute in their pulpit.

When a faithful few turned up for the morning service, the first thing they saw were two girls standing in the pulpit. No ...

Who Is on the Lord's Side?

A time of refreshing from the presence of the Lord is also a time for great searching of hearts (Judges 5:16). Will you give a few moments to consider some questions concerning revival in your life?

1. Are you an enemy of revival? To treat lightly the operations of the Holy Spirit is very dangerous, not unlike the sin of the Pharisees who dishonored the miracles of Christ. Men may grieve or fight against the Lord and oppose His work of grace by denying it or by dwelling on everything that seems to be false in it, even when ...

From the Director

To commemorate Life Action Ministries’ fifth year of offering Heartcry! journal, we have redesigned the cover around the theme of a classic text on revival, Isaiah 64:1. Isaiah’s desire was for God to “rend the heavens and come down” in a supernatural display of His divine power and presence.

Isaiah’s prayer captures the heartcry of God’s people for revival as well as any verse in Scripture. No substitutes or man-made solutions can satisfy. Only the manifest reality of the Holy Spirit at work in the hearts of His people will fill this longing.

I strongly believe ...

Jonathan Edwards: Theologian of Revival

Edwards was a Puritan in theology and practice. He not only fully concurred with the Puritans in their Reformed theology of salvation but shared their emphasis on the centrality of practical and experiential Christianity. Edwards’ brilliant mind and remarkable exegetical acumen equipped him for the task of describing and defending revivals.

In all, Edwards wrote five treatises on revival. The first was A Narrative of Surprising Conversions, which describes the revival in Northampton in 1735 in which three hundred souls were added to the church. The second was Thoughts on the Revival in New England (1740); the third, The Distinguishing ...
