From the Director

In the technological era in which we live, information is being generated at a phenomenal rate. In fact, current estimates predict that knowledge will be doubling every year by 2002. Given this dizzying progress, it would be natural (though incorrect) to assume that the human race is well on its way to solving all of the problems of life.
Despite all the advances, the “new solutions”of modernity do not appear to be addressing the “old problems” of unhappiness and lack of peace that have plagued human existence throughout history.

Thousands of years ago, King Solomon warned that until men ...

Crying unto Jesus

“Behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto Him” (Matt. 15:22, KJV).

In this prayer the Syro-Phoenician woman cried with intense feeling. Would it not have been more modest for her to speak gently to this soul-redeeming Savior, who hears before we pray, than to cry or shout? Was Christ so hard to be entreated? The disciples afterward complained of her crying after them, but there were reasons for her loud praying that are applicable to us.

First, need cannot blush. The pinching necessity of the saints is not bound by the law ...

Daniel Rowland of Llangeitho

Daniel Rowland of Llangeitho, Wales, stands next to his contemporary George Whitefield in might, faith, and zeal. In natural boldness and energy of character, tempered with gentleness and love, he had few equals. In fervor of spirit, in singleness of eye and heart, in compassion for souls, he is marked out among a thousand. The success of his ministry was truly marvelous. He blazed like a torch in majestic brightness, illuminating the darkness of his native mountains. He went forth in the strength of God, enduring storms of persecution and carrying with him from valley to valley the glad tidings ...

God At Work in Revival - Journey to Forgiveness

Editor’s note: We are introducing “God at Work,” a feature which will be included in future issues of HeartCry!. The purpose of this section is to give contemporary accounts of God’s working in the lives of individuals, families, and churches.]

On Thursday evening, October 8, 1998, I was sitting next to Judy, my wife of 16 years, when revivalist Tim St. Clair spoke at our church on the importance of clearing one’s conscience. Afterward, at home, Judy and I sat at the kitchen table over glasses of tea and began discussing how God was working in people ...

God Comes Down to Us

It was a gorgeous September day in the northeast of Scotland, 1984. I was standing atop a hill overlooking the valley where my family and I lived while I was doing my doctoral work at the University of Aberdeen. As I rested at the summit, my eyes were exulting in the lovely view.

At that moment I noticed that puffy cumulus clouds were casting shadows randomly on the valley floor. In one place all was green and bright. In another place it was shadowy, gray, and subdued. Suddenly, a thought came to me. The church is like this. In some ...

Hope for National Revival

“Oh, that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence” (Isa. 64:1, KJV).

Despite the downward spiral in the spiritual condition of our nation, there is good reason for Christians to hope that God may grant a sovereign, widespread revival of grace and righteousness in our land. After all, God is still in absolute control of the affairs of this world. Time after time throughout history, usually when circumstances have been the darkest, God has burst upon the scene and caused gospel light to shine in gross darkness ...

John Sung and the Asian Awakening

According to Edward Band, there were only a score of missionaries in China three decades after Robert Morrison first brought the gospel to the country, and the total numbers baptized did not exceed one hundred. In fact, in 1900, the Chinese Church was just coming of age. Although a few foreign missionaries such as Marie Monson, Anna Christiansen, and Jonathan Goforth had considerable impact, the Asian Awakening did not begin in earnest until 1931 under the ministry of a native son, Dr. John Sung.

The Spirit mightily fell on Sung, and thousands were brought into the kingdom through his ministry ...

Personal Meditations on Powerful Texts

“I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one” (Ezek. 22:30, NASB).

What a remarkable passage we have here from the lips of the Lord! According to the text, the great sovereign King of the universe would have halted His judgment upon His people, except that He found one thing lacking--a man among the rebellious who would build up the walls and stand in the gap before Him. One such man would have ...
