The Laws of Revival

In the history of Christianity, no phenomenon is more apparent than the recurrence of revivals. At certain intervals there sweeps over certain geographical areas a passion of repentance. Large numbers of persons who have been dead or indifferent to spiritual realities then become intensely awakened to them. They are arrested in the midst of their worldly occupations and suddenly seized by a terror of wrongdoing. Fear of an impending doom haunts their minds. Flinging all else aside, they earnestly seek a way of escape and cry out for salvation.

These movements, when once begun, spread with amazing rapidity. They pervade ...

How England was Revived in the 18th Century

That a great change for the better came over England during the 18th century is a fact that I suppose no well-informed person would ever attempt to deny. You might as well attempt to deny that there was a Protestant Reformation in the days of Luther, a Long Parliament in the time of Cromwell, or a French Republic at the end of the 18th century. There was a vast change for the better. Both in religion and in morality, the country gradually went through a complete revolution. This is a great fact that even the irreligious cannot deny, however they ...

Sermons of George Whitefield

New Ipswich, New Hampshire: Pietan Publications (1991)

George Whitefield was the greatest evangelist of the eighteenth century, and one of the greatest preachers who has ever lived. This collection of seventy-eight of his sermons can rightly be described as some of the finest evangelistic preaching ever published as a set.

Before the printing of these sermons, no extensive collection of Whitefield’s sermons was available. Only about 115 of Whitefield’s sermons have survived to the present day, and the three-volume set under review is now the largest collection of Whitefield’s preaching ever to be printed.

To read Whitefield ...

The Personal Covenant of William Grimshaw

[Editor’s note: On December 4, 1752, the Reverend William Grimshaw wrote out the following personal covenant with God, which he renewed four times each year with a day of fasting.] Glory be to You, O triune God. I desire to be wholly Yours forever. This day I give myself up to You as a living sacrifice. I solemnly renounce the world, the flesh, and the devil. No more, directly or indirectly, will I obey them. O Lord, I would steadfastly persevere to my last breath in obedience to Your commandments. I pray that every day of my life may ...

The History of Revival in Wales in the 19th Century

During the 19th century, there were several revivals in Wales. A brief sketch of the more remarkable of these will show how certain traits appeared in each of the revivals as if transmitted to one another by a hereditary law.

Many know the story of the village of Beddgelert and the valley of Gwynant. In a farmhouse in the valley one Sunday in August 1817, a humble man named Richard Williams was expected to preach. He came, but the congregation was small. John Elias, a famous minister, was preaching that day at Tremadoc, and his fame had, in spite of ...

A Course of Lectures on Preaching

Carlisle, Pennsylvania: Banner of Truth Trust (1999)
361 pages

This book was first published in 1870 with the title Sacred Rhetoric, then in 1979 was reprinted by the Banner of Truth Trust as R. L. Dabney on Preaching. Now the Banner of Truth has brought it back into print for a second time in this new edition, Evangelical Eloquence: A Course of Lectures on Preaching. The fact that this work has been preserved through multiple reprintings is a testament to its usefulness and quality.

R. L. Dabney (1820-98) served as a Presbyterian pastor at Tinkling Springs, Virginia, and then assumed ...

Unction

In the Christian system, unction is the anointing of the Holy Ghost that separates and qualifies men for God’s work. Unction is the one divine enablement by which the preacher accomplishes the saving ends of preaching. Without it, there are no true spiritual results accomplished. Many pleasant impressions may be made, but these all fall far below the ends of gospel preaching.

Unction may be simulated. There are many things resembling it that are foreign to its nature. The emotions excited by an emotional sermon may look like the movements of divine unction, but they have no penetrating, heart-breaking ...

The Equipment of Prayer

“Thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray . . .” (Matt. 6:6, KJV).

The equipment for the inner life of prayer is simple but not always easily secured. It consists particularly of a quiet place, a quiet hour, and a quiet heart.

For many, a quiet place is easily obtained. However, there are tens of thousands of believers who find it generally impossible to withdraw into the desired seclusion of a secret place. A mother in a crowded apartment, a laborer in city lodgings, a soldier in barracks, a student living at school--these ...

William Grimshaw: Showers on Dry Ground

In 1742, our dear Lord was pleased to visit my parish,” wrote William Grimshaw in a description of the work of God that had taken place in the village of Haworth, a rural town in the north of England. It would be easy to assume from these words that the remarkable events that occurred began quickly, but this would be inaccurate. The work started slowly, and Grimshaw records that at first only “a few souls” were affected under the Word. Yet, from this humble beginning, a great revival began that swept the region.

Grimshaw’s preaching at the outset of ...

Personal Meditations on Powerful Texts - Spring

“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” Hosea 10:12 Hosea was assigned the burdensome task of preaching to a people who were familiar with the ways of God but who no longer walked in them. His plea culminated in this verse where we sense the agonizing cry of his heart. He knew both the need to be recognized and the solution to be embraced if God’s people were to avert catastrophic judgment. First, Hosea made it ...

From the Director

There is a great deal of truth in the maxim, “Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of history are destined to repeat them.” One example that bears repeating in our day is a decision made by the clergy of New England in 1662. Faced with declining attendance in their churches, the ministers agreed to lower the standards for church membership. “Credible evidence of a new birth” was replaced by mere assent to the doctrinal statement of the church.

The answer to the widespread spiritual barrenness that resulted over the next fifty years came in the form of the ...

A Time of Refreshing

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. One shall say, I am the Lord’s” (Isaiah 44:3-5a, KJV).

These words describe a time of refreshing. There are no other words in the whole Bible that have been more often in my heart and on my tongue since I began my ministry. Although God has never left me without some tokens of ...

A Promise of Revival

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt” (Amos 9:13, KJV).

Originally, as you are aware, the land of Canaan was very fertile. It was a land that flowed with milk and honey. Now the land is barren, and its valleys are parched. Yet the promise stands true that one day Palestine will be as rich and fruitful as ever it was. However, while this promise will be carried out, this ...

Undiscerned Spiritual Pride

The first and worst cause of error that prevails in our day is spiritual pride. This is the main door by which the devil comes into the hearts of those who are zealous for the advancement of Christ. It is the chief inlet of smoke from the bottomless pit to darken the mind and mislead the judgment, and the main handle by which Satan takes hold of Christians to hinder a work of God. Until this disease is cured, medicines are applied in vain to heal all other diseases.

Pride is much more difficult to discern than any other corruption ...
