Live
"One of my happiest memories of childhood has to do with Mother and Father's belief in prayer and fasting. Friday, late afternoon and evening, was set aside in their week for this purpose. Mother would go out of her way to prepare for us [children] the most wonderful meal of all. It must have been a real temptation for her as she prepared hot breads or cinnamon rice. This evidence of love stimulated our desire to walk with the One whom our parents followed closely" (from Towers to Eternity, Paul Freed, Word Books, 1968).
Ralph and Mildred Freed served as missionaries in the Middle East. Then, at an age when many retire, they helped their son Paul begin a new work in 1952—Trans World Radio, which today reaches millions of people with the gospel of Christ (in 160 countries, using 200 languages and dialects). The Freeds' example of living out the disciplines of prayer and fasting surely was an important factor in the spiritual success of their ministry, and later their son's ministry, which exponentially multiplied their work to help fulfill Christ's Great Commission. Have you ever applied the discipline of fasting to your prayer life?

High school athletes in our day often challenge themselves to take their game "to the next level." In fact, they sometimes can be seen wearing T-shirts printed with the acronym TNL (The Next Level) as a reminder of their goal.
Adding fasting to our prayer life is a way Christians can challenge themselves to more powerfully cry out to God in prayer, based on Isaiah 58 and following the example of Christ.
Would you consider fasting one meal this month, using that time to ask God specifically how He would like you to give out of your resources to ministries or individuals in the next 30 days? Take your prayer life to the next level, and you may be amazed at how God answers, and what He does in response to your sacrificial giving of time in prayer.
