Live
If you knew that your children or grandchildren could be taken from you at any moment by enemy armies, how would you prepare them? What would take priority over everything else in the little time you might have with them?
Mary Previte (great-granddaughter of pioneer missionary Hudson Taylor) tells what her mother did when she faced this very scenario. Every morning as the missionary family gathered around the table in their China home prior to World War II, Mary's mother would help her children memorize Scripture by setting passages like Psalm 91 and Isaiah 58 to music.
When the enemy took over the mission school where the four children were studying, Mary was seven years old. The children spent the next five years in a Japanese prison camp, along with Olympic runner Eric Liddell, also a missionary to China who was known for his God-centered priorities.
During those years, these Scriptures set to song helped carry the children as they endured hardship and the terrible interruption of their childhood. They were miraculously reunited with their parents at the war's end.
Give
Life can change at any moment, and everything dear can be swept away. Will the priorities by which you are living your life serve the kingdom of Christ and our next generation well?
One effective way to evaluate our priorities is to take a hard look at the things that claim our time daily. Our Executive Director, Byron Paulus, believes that you can discern what is most important to a person by looking at their daily planner. He has been greatly challenged by a wise, older Christian who arranges his written planner around the priorities God has impressed on him for his life.
Our giving provides another reflection of what is most important to us. Do your recent expenditures and gifts indicate the kind of priorities that spring from a love for God, a concern for the eternal souls of people, and a commitment to the unshakeable kingdom of Christ?
