"Pride is the number one hindrance to revival, and the basis of pride is comparison. Humility comes by comparing yourself to only One, the Lord Jesus.”
— Richard Owen Roberts

Live
Books and studies surrounding him, the man concentrated intently. In the quiet, God's Spirit began to powerfully convict him of his lost condition. The man believed there was a God and knew much about Him from Scripture, but he had never been convinced of his personal need for Christ's work of salvation.
Several weeks prior to this moment, an "unusual revival of religion took place" in the "Congregational societies" in his village of New Haven. His wife was deeply affected by these times of revival, but he would never attend. His excuse was that he feared the whole movement would become fanatical.
But this night, "My mind was suddenly arrested to the awakening, and my own conduct. I closed my books, yielded to the influence which could not be resisted or mistaken, and was led to repentance, prayer, and entire submission and surrender of myself to my Maker and Redeemer." Actions testifying to this change of heart soon followed in the life of Noah Webster, who, some 20 years later in 1828, would publish The American Dictionary of the English Language.
Who you are praying and longing for to become a Christ-follower? Don't give up. Are you longing for revival and spiritual awakening in our land? Don't stop praying. The person—and the country—you intercede for may yet influence the world greatly with the gospel of Christ.
Give
One of our staff revivalists tells this old story about a miser and a mensch (Yiddish word meaning "person of integrity").
The miser cared not at all for any person, only for the preservation of his own wealth. One day, the mensch took the miser over to a window and asked him to look down on the city street below.
"What do you see?" asked the mensch.
"I see people," replied the miser. The mensch then led the miser to a mirror and asked, "Now tell me what you see," to which the miser replied, "I see myself."
"And so," concluded the mensch, "just a little bit of silver [referencing the miser's wealth] applied to the back of the glass causes a person to see only themselves, and no longer others."
Miser and miserable have the same root, Noah Webster tells us in his 1828 dictionary, and he describes a miser as "one who in wealth makes himself miserable by the fear of poverty."
Are you a miser, or do you see the needs of others and cheerfully give to help? May God give you wisdom and use you to display His compassion to this world.
